It is easy to mistake capability for value. A screen with twelve filters looks more powerful than a screen with two. It usually is not — it has just moved the work from the software to the person using it.
Clarity is the discipline of deciding things on the user’s behalf, and being right often enough that they stop checking. That requires knowing the work well enough to have an opinion about it.
The test we use is simple: can someone who has been here two weeks do the right thing without being told? If not, the interface is asking them to hold context the system should be holding.
